Chapter Eleven

AMBER

I had been nervous. Chase had never asked me out on a date before. We’d always just crossed paths as neighbors and let one thing lead to another. If I wasn’t helping with Hailee or asking for a favor, we didn’t really talk. The fact he called me up, instead of texting, and asked for a real date made my heart almost stop. As soon as I said yes, though, I started to worry. What if I was reading too much into it.

What if he was asking me out to tell me that he didn’t want to go out. At least, not officially. It could have been that he was trying to figure out how to let me down easy. All the possibilities I’d seen on those serial dramas started coming back to haunt me. As silly as it was, I couldn't get it out of my head. I lied when I said I couldn’t figure out which dress to wear. I was actually debating whether or not to show up. If he was just going to tell me he didn’t want to see me anymore…or worse…that sleeping together was a mistake, I didn’t want him to tell me to my face. I didn’t want him to see me cry.

Imagine my surprise when just the opposite happened. After a wonderful dinner in such a romantic setting, he asked me if I’d date him with all the same sincerity and nervousness dof a guy about to propose. I would’ve had a whole bottle of champagne that night if it hadn’t been so expensive. Of course, I told Chase “yes” and after dinner was over he invited me back to his place.

“Can I get you anything?” he asked.

“Maybe a glass of water?” I answered.

Chase was already grabbing a beer out of the fridge.

“A beer’s good too,” I laughed.

He tossed me the one in his hand then grabbed another for himself.

“Boy, am I relieved,” he sighed.

“Relieved? Why?”

“Because you said yes.” Chase took a sip of his beer to hide his bashfulness.

“Did you think I’d say no?” I was genuinely curious.

“I honestly didn’t know what to think. I just hoped everything would turn out okay.”

I thought it was cute how worried he was that I’d turn him down. We’d slept together twice and for whatever reason he hadn’t realized I’d been crushing on him, but none of that mattered now. He’d told me with absolute certainty that he wanted me to be his girlfriend and I had a chance to tell him I’d love it if he were my boyfriend.

Boyfriend…

Just saying the word to myself made me a little giddy. Chase wasn’t just the hot neighbor across the street that I hooked up with occasionally, he was my boyfriend.

I took a long draw on my beer and giggled.

“What’s so funny?” he asked.

“Nothing,” I smiled and grabbed Chase’s hand.

Then I kissed him. It was just a playful peck on the lips. He put his beer on the counter so he could wrap his arms around me.
